I hope your mother feels better soon. It is another reminder to keep important things first and make a conscious effort to slow down and spend time with our loved ones. Family should always come first and it is hard to keep it a priority when every minute of your schedule is filled with to-do things that seem so important.
I love the example about Rocks, Stones, Pebbles and Sand. If you fill your "jar of life" with important things first like rocks and stones, there will always be room to fill it in with pebbles and sand, however, if you do it vice versa there won't be room for rocks - your highest life priorities that gives you fulfillment and purpose.
It is always easy say than do, I know......

The vranyo that is part of Russian culture is also found in mother daughter relationships. We lie to one another and find it's easier than the truth.

Elena my wife and I both read your book and thoroughly enjoyed it. It left me with the deep impression of a very strong individual. In that regard it is very inspiring. Not to mention that you have put a human face on the inscrutable stereotype of the Russian people that we grew up with here in Canada and the US. In that regard you done your country an inestimable service. And to top it all, you're a fantastic writer in your adopted language. You have a gift for descriptive prose that makes your writing very very engaging. Thank you so much for your wonderful work.

Elena, the sheer number of comments you got meant you touched the chord you should have. And we know that the less people have, the tighter they cling to it.

Elena, I was delighted to discover your recent article in The NY Times, on Sunday, 10/23/11. As always, you have expessed yourself with clarity and amusingly. You certainly have a knack of staing the case!

I love your book. You are speaking my soul. I have been in NY for 11 years already. I was born later than the major events in the book but they are still burning inside me, so I guess they were digested genetically.

Oh, Lena, I can just picture you. But entirely unwittingly, you pulled the best American stunt of all - effective bargaining. Good on you for getting those shoes at a 25% discount on the basis of honest shame. (Do you still have them? Did you pass them down to Lauren? ;-) )

Lena, wonderful and evocative as always. It has been such an honor to know your mum and to cherish a small part of her history as a very large and pivotal part in our own - as the creator of Kiara's famous Kiki bear, without whose steadfast presence my family would undoubtedly have shriveled and perished. And I didn't know she was also a breast cancer survivor. Must pass that info on.

I just love your writing; your mastery of images--those critical moments--warms my heart. (Your mother will outlive us all, you know that, don't you?)
